Time Out says

The Block is an area of historical importance in Redfern, which has been the site of protests and community gatherings since the 1960s, a time when landlords campaigned to evict the Aboriginal residents in the area. The Aboriginal Housing Company, who purchased the area over a period of 30 years, plan to develop it to create affordable housing on the site for Aboriginal peoples. The development is called the Pemulwuy Project. The Block was the scene of the 2004 Redfern riots, which resulted in the death of an Australian Aboriginal boy, killed after being impaled on a fence while fleeing from police.
