Beer and karaoke go together like peas in a pod, like Fred and Ginger, Sonny and Cher, Muriel and Rhonda (in full ABBA costume, doing ‘Waterloo’). In honour of World Record Day on April 18, Alexandria’s Yulli’s Brews is teaming up with Japanese electronic wizards Audio-Technica and launching ‘Karaoke Kingu’, a fresh new Japanese rice lager.
Your first chance to taste the new brew will be on Friday, April 3, where the gang will be pouring it from an authentic Japanese tap at the brewery. And because the release of a karaoke-inspired beer wouldn’t be legit without a proper karaoke competition, Dave Eastgate and the Boner Contention will be on hand busting out ’80s bangers so you and your mates can belt out your favourite hits with the backing of a live band.
The action kicks off at 6pm and entry is free. The kitchen will be rolling up vegan sushi all night, and if you really want to lean into the theme, you can taste Yulli’s new sake and shop for records upstairs at the pop-up vinyl market, as well as for Karaoke Kingu merch (inspired by Astro Boy!) designed by Sydney artist Jeremy Lord.
