There’s something special about NSW’s Central Coast. Golden beaches, a laid-back energy, ever-developing food scene, hot live music offerings and the fact that it’s just a breezy 90-minute drive north of Sydney. And spring is the perfect time to pack the car and head up the M1 (or take the train). With a stacked calendar of events – many of them free – and a coastline in all its springtime glory, there’s never been a better excuse for a weekend escape. Think markets, outdoor gigs, delicious food and plenty of spots to soak up the sunshine.

So, whether you’re fresh off a whirlwind Euro trip and feeling the post-holiday blues, or keen for an affordable local getaway before the silly season kicks off, grab your sunnies, queue up your road trip playlist, and roll those windows down. Here’s your guide to the best things to do on the Central Coast this spring and summer:

4 things to do on the Central Coast

Get ready for 10 days of music, art, and culture as the Lakes Festival takes over the Central Coast from November 7-16. This year, the festival brings more than 30 events to the region’s coastal towns, all celebrating sustainability and connecting with nature. Think Indigenous fine dining, seafood feasts, kayak eco tours, art workshops and live performances. The highlight? Light Up the Lake on November 8 is set to be a dazzling night of fireworks, family fun, and live music with headliners Ruby Fields, Dear Sunday and Dizzy Days on the bill.

If fresh oysters are your kind of heaven, then head north this November 9 for the Brisbane Water Oyster Festival. Taking over Lions Park in Woy Woy, you can slurp your way through the freshest oysters and seafood around town. Meet the local growers, chat with the farmers and take part in the 30-second oyster eating contest where the winner will take home a trophy prize and ultimate bragging rights. Swing by between 10am-4pm for tasty food, live music and craft finds.

Australia’s most popular arts event is back in action. After showing at the Art Gallery of NSW, the Archibald finalists are set to hang on the walls of regional galleries so any art appreciators outside of Sydney can catch a peep. Gosford Regional Gallery is up first, marking its 25th year of hosting the prize. Pop in between November 22 and January 11 to wander through some seriously impressive portraits.

While the Central Coast might be best known for its laid-back beach towns and stunning stretch of coastline, it's also a hub for makers and creators. Enter Creative Spaces: a community-focused event at the Gallery Container, Toukley Village Green, packed with workshops, talks, and hands-on activities. Running until November 30, you can get creative with local visual artist-in-residence Susan Merchant, who’s leading hand-lettering classes, brush pen and watercolour workshops and even a festive Christmas wreath activity.
