[Update, May 13] This year's Roppongi Art Night has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Once a year, the biggest museums and galleries in the district of Roppongi put on special programmes and extend their opening hours for Roppongi Art Night. The one-night only festival is set to be held between May 30 and 31 this year, but with events being cancelled or postponed left and right – including the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – due to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, those dates may be subject to change.

Roppongi Art Night had its tenth anniversary in 2019 and this year's edition remains a highly anticipated event with exhibitions by both local and international artists. Earlier in March, organisers revealed that this year’s main program will highlight one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artists – Takashi Murakami.

One of Murakami’s installations will be a collaboration with the artist Madsaki and once again feature the popular cat robot, Doraemon, who was also the focus of Murakami's collaboration with Uniqlo in 2018. Other artists in Murakami's Kaikai Kiki collective will also be participating in this event.

While further details haven’t been announced by the organisers since the initial press release, we're hoping that if Roppongi Art Night has to be rescheduled, it doesn't get cancelled altogether like Murakami's planned March show at Hong Kong Art Basel.
