Many cities around the world—big or small—set off amazing fireworks when the clock strikes midnight to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. In Bangkok, the fireworks are no less than amazing, with many dazzling displays shooting up all around town and over the Chao Phraya River.

These fireworks can be seen across the city, but you’d have to know where to go if you want a front-row seat to these explosive illuminations. Here’s a round-up of the best spots to behold fireworks on New Year’s Eve—from riverfront promenades to sky-high points to intimate room hotels—and ring in 2023 in a special way.

RECOMMEND: Discover a marriage between two vibrant cultures in Bangkok’s Chinatown or many wonderful neighborhoods via the ‘Reconnect With Your City’ campaign.

ICONSIAM

Thanks to its spacious riverfront promenade, ICONSIAM has become the spot to welcome the new year in Charoen Nakhon. Every year, the megamall hosts a celebration that features live concerts and cultural performances until midnight, which is when the fireworks start to light up the dark sky.

ICONSIAM pulls in the crowd during New Year’s Eve, so you have to be quick and resourceful to get tickets. But it’s all worth it when you find yourself among happy revelers and with an unobstructed, close-up view of the vibrant pyrotechnics exploding over the Chao Phraya River.

River City Bangkok

One of the best art spaces in Bangkok is also a great spot to see NYE fireworks in Charoenkrung. Its riverside terrace offers the perfect lookout to the many fireworks displays along the river. Plus, the venue also hosts its own fun arts-focused events, such as the annual Mango Art Festival and RBC Auctions, that can help enhance your year-end celebrations.

Asiatique the Riverfront

On the opposite end of Charoenkrung is Asiatique the Riverfront, a huge complex that’s home to many trendy shops, restaurants, and Bangkok’s version of the London Eye.

It’s easy enough to spend the whole evening here. Hop on the 60-meter Ferris wheel to witness the sunset over the Chao Phraya before wandering down alleyways lined with cute boutiques and novelty shops. There are many restaurants to choose from to have your last meal of the year, but we recommend getting a table at Sirimahannop, a nautically-styled dining room set in a three-masted vintage-style vessel. This 58.5-meter ship docked permanently at Asiatique, was constructed with inspiration from a Royal Thai navy ship in the era of King Rama V as a nod to ancient maritime trades between Siam (ancient Thailand) and foreign countries. The upper deck serves as an outdoor drinking space where you'll get to sip classic tipples under the stars, while the lower deck provides a nautical-themed space for intimate dining. How cool would it be to watch fireworks as if you’re on a cruise ship!

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

This time-honored riverside hotel in Charoenkrung offers a more intimate New Year celebration with your loved ones over a delectable dinner. Go traditional with authentic Thai fare at Thara Thong, or end the year indulging in hearty Italian dishes at Giorgio’s. Both restaurants have outdoor seating where you can get a front-row view of the luminous spectacle in the sky. Feast is also a good option if you want to enjoy the last night of 2022, relishing an array of international delights.

Supanniga Eating Room, Tha Tien

Kiss the year goodbye with flavorful home-style Thai cuisine at Supanniga Eating Room in Tha Tien. This particular branch of the popular Thai restaurant is set in a two-story wooden house next to the Chao Phraya and promises unbeatable vistas of the river, the temples along its banks, and, on New Year’s Eve, splendid views of the fireworks extravaganza in the midnight sky.

Baan Rim Naam

Baan Rim Nam is one of the Chinese community Talad Noi’s best-kept secrets. But we’re revealing it because you deserve to see the fireworks from a golden spot after enjoying an exquisite Thai meal.

The restaurant sits in a 200-year-old warehouse surrounded by a small garden. The vibe is easygoing and relaxing, so you can just kick back and chill with a cold drink as you watch the light show unfold.

Yao Rooftop Bar

Nestled on the 32nd floor of Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse, this Charoenkrung’s highest rooftop bar with a Chinese influence is a perfect spot to catch the fireworks with the gorgeous Chao Phraya River setting and celebrate the coming of a new year. There’s limited seating, so call ahead to get your reservations in.

Abar Rooftop

Located on the apex of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, this sophisticated bar is an amazing spot for panoramic views of the breathtaking fireworks show. You definitely want a drink in your hand (choose from one of Abar’s gin-based concoctions) as you marvel at the dazzling illuminations in the sky.

Octave Rooftop Bar & Lounge

This high-rise al fresco bar at Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit is the perfect spot for dancing 'til the sun comes and heralding in 2023. Local DJs take turns dominating the deck and blasting out EDM tunes. But don't forget to take a pause from partying as you marvel at the explosion of colors in the sky when January 1 arrives.

The St. Regis Bar

Take it slow and easy at The St. Regis' signature bar in Ratchadamri. It's not a rooftop spot, but this elegant bar's panoramic windows still provide an amazing perspective of year-end fireworks, not to mention The Royal Bangkok Sports Club's pristine greenery. And you can also try exchanging the Champagne for the bar's famed Bloody Mary as you toast to the possibilities a new year brings.

Sanyan Mitrtown

This lifestyle and retail venue in the happening neighborhood of Samyan (near Siam and Pathum Wan) is a favorite for affordable eats, shopping sprees, big events, and indie movies.

The sixth floor of this 222,000-square-meter mixed-use mall provides access to an outdoor area where you can watch the fireworks with Bangkok’s cityscape as your foreground—for free. This is another site that will be heavily populated on New Year’s Eve, so come early to nab a spot.

Sirimahannop

Asiatique the Riverfront during New Year’s Eve will be buzzing with revelers, but you can shy away from the crowd aboard the Sirimahannop. Set right on the Chao Phraya River, this boat-turned-restaurant provides a clear view of the midnight sky show. The historical nautical setting and great food and cocktails are also a bonus.

Cross over to 2023 on one of the city’s many bridges

Taksin Bridge

Connecting Sathorn and Thonburi, this busy bridge has been seeing traffic since it opened in 1982. On New Year’s Eve, however, the rows of cars are replaced by people hoping to get an unhindered view of all the spectacular fireworks displays over the Chao Phraya come midnight. Taksin Bridge is the perfect vantage point to see the light blaze over Bangkok’s main waterway as well as the establishments along its banks, such as ICONSIAM, Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Asiatique the Riverfront, and many more.

Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut)

Inaugurated by King Rama VII in 1932, this historic drawbridge was the first passageway to Thonburi on the western side of the Chao Phraya. Surrounded by popular old-town neighborhoods and attractions, such as Phahurat Road (Bangkok’s Little India), the statue of King Taksin in Wongwian Yai, and Chao Phraya Sky Park, the bridge draws excited and high-spirited locals during the last day of the year.

Ratchaprasong Skywalk

The lengthy boardwalk, which stretches from BTS Siam station all the way to BTS Chidlom station, with an extension to Gaysorn Village and centralwOrld, lets you catch all the pyrotechnic action from a distance. The colorful sky show is still amazing, nonetheless. And you also get an eyeful of all the Christmas lights, and grandiose decor put up by five-star hotels and shopping malls in central Bangkok. For the best vantage point, try to secure a spot over the Ratchaprasong intersection or in front of Gaysorn Village.

W Bangkok

If you’re not keen on celebrating New Year’s Eve with the crowds, you have the option to stay in a plush hotel room and bid hello to the coming year with just friends and loved ones. The rooms in the soaring W Bangkok in Sathorn are an excellent choice to see year-end fireworks without having to jostle for space or craning your neck to the sky. We recommend booking the Cool Corner room for the best views.

Once the fireworks die down, you can go to The Bar at The House on Sathorn or WOOBAR a few floors below and celebrate 2023 with non-stop dancing and a bottle—or two—of bubbly.

JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok

Lower Sukhumvit’s streets and bars may not be a good option if you want to see the fireworks in peace, but you can always book a room at JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok if you want less chaotic but still unforgettable memories of celebrating New Year in the City of Angels.

Snag a room on the higher floors to see the sky sparkle up from a multitude of fireworks being set off simultaneously. The hotel’s family rooms or suites are big enough to host a mini viewing party if you're a big group.

Wake up to new beginnings after a comfortable night

After a night of festivities and a long, possibly champagne-induced sleep, wake up to a new year and new beginnings at some of Bangkok’s most tasteful hotels.

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers in Charoenkrung lies in close proximity to fireworks-viewing landmarks like Taksin Bridge or Asiatique The Riverfront, and within walking distance to River City Bangkok. Get one of the spacious guest rooms where you can wake up to see the first break of dawn in 2023 and take in the peaceful vistas of the Chao Phraya River from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Bangkok Marriott The Surawongse is another gem for premium stays during the year-end season. The high-rise hotel is located in Surawong, which connects to popular areas for NYE celebrations like Siam, Yaowarat, and Sathorn. But if you want to escape the crowd and go about fireworks-watching in relative peace, Yao Rooftop Bar on the hotel’s 32nd floor has an al fresco area that’s prime real estate for the said endeavor.
