It’s October, so we take it that most New Year's resolutions have already been broken at this point (if yours are still intact, then kudos to you), but in the wise words of the late Aaliyah, 'if at first you don’t succeed, you can dust it off and try again'. With the first ever Hari Sukan Negara (National Sports Day, a nationwide event to get Malaysians to break a sweat and be active for a day) happening tomorrow, here's your chance to kickstart your #BeFit regiment. We've rounded up some activities you can do:

fitness

Try out a gym for free
If you’re not sure where to start, there’s always the gym. All Celebrity Fitness, Fast Track and Fitness First outlets will be having an open day on which the public will get free access throughout the day. Terms and conditions differ for each gym so be sure to check their websites and have a look at their special membership deals.

bubble futsal

Do an unusual sport
Do you want to be healthy without falling into the cookie-cutter mould that is the gym? The KL Car Free Morning will be doing a special Saturday edition in conjunction with Hari Sukan Negara so you can rollerskate, skateboard, cycle and even handcycle around Dataran DBKL – think of it as KL’s little playground for the morning. If you're hungry for more, you can also sign up with social sports community Sports Bandits (bubble futsal looks both fun and hilarious).

skywarrior

Complete an obstacle course
Obstacle courses are fun, especially when you mentally narrate your every move – you can imagine you’re in a video game or a contestant on Takeshi’s Castle. They're also easier to work through than say, a gym plan because the end goals of obstacle courses are short-term. Try the SkyWarrior Rainforest Challenge or District 21.

hot yostudio

Keep calm and do yoga
Be fit and unwind at the same time through yoga. Organica Lifestyle will be having an open day on October 10, so learn more about the different types of yoga and see which one fits you best. Alternatively, you can also try out hot yoga at Hot Yo Studio which currently offers a special introductory price of RM89 for seven straight days of unlimited yoga classes.

kemensah

Take a hike from the city
With the haze still lurking around in KL, it’s time to make a short trip to the woods. It’s a good way to be fit and also a breath of fresh air for a little while. See our list of the best secret hiking trails in Klang Valley.

Still clueless?
If you still can’t decide on how to start your fitness plans, drop by the Malaysian International Sports Expo organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. There will be booths, demonstrations and activities for you to try out such as zumba, piloxing and wushu.

PS: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, the YB behind this initiative, is on the cover of this month’s Men’s Health.
