Back in July, RapidKL operator Prasarana had proposed the idea of a fare adjustment, which has since been confirmed. Following the opening of four new stations on the Ampang Line last weekend, RapidKL announced the details of its new train fares on Monday, coinciding with KTM Berhad's startling announcement that KTM fares will also see some changes. Here’s what you need to know about the new train fares:

1. The LRT and monorail will now be charged by distance, starting with a flagfall rate of 70 cents plus 30 cents for the first four kilometres. After that, commuters will be charged according to distance blocks starting with 26.4 cents per kilometre. Gradually, the rate will reduce as commuters go further. For example, a trip from Masjid Jamek to Bandar Tasik Selatan will cost RM4.20 from its old fare of RM3.30. A trip from Kelana Jaya all the way to Gombak only costs RM2.50 today, but will cost RM4.10 next month. See the new train fares here.

2. KTM's announcement of its new fare structure (that charges 15 sen per kilometre) for the Tanjung Malim-Sungai Gadut and Batu Caves-Port Klang routes will see an increase in fares from Dec 2. According to data published by The Star, travelling from KL Sentral to Bandar Tasik Selatan would cost RM2.40 instead of RM1, whereas heading to Mid Valley from KL Sentral would cost RM1.80 (instead of RM1).

3. You will save more if you use a cashless mode of payment which includes Touch 'n Go and each train service’s weekly or monthly tickets. Discounts for going cashless can go up to 35 percent depending on packages. The new MyRapid packages will be on sale November 15.

4. There are plans to integrate the fare system for all trains in the Klang Valley, enabling commuters a single ticket for access to all the train services. The Automatic Fare Collection system is planned to be operational by June 2016 and will also integrate with the upcoming MRT.

5. All the new fare structures will be implemented from December 2.
