This Merdeka month, we are paying tribute to our beloved city by honouring KL’s original businesses, the mom-and-pop establishments, the institutions we grew up with – which are still here today.

We’re talking about kopitiams our parents brought us to because they had the first TV in the neighbourhood; the medicinal halls we relied on to get traditional herbs (when we needed herbal tea to cool down); the kedai runcit where we curi-curi bought sweets with our pocket money. These old school businesses were the mainstays of our lives before hypermarkets, chain restaurants and effervescent vitamins took over. They’re a part of our culture and identity, and we should support them. This national day, it’s not just about looking forward, but also acknowledging those who have been with us all this while.

In another feature, we explore what is the modern Malaysian aesthetic, through shops and brands that are up-cycling and repurposing classic Malaysian items into contemporary design and fashion.

In Food, we went in search for the best egg dishes in KL, and they are not just for breakfast. Here you’ll find some of the city’s best egg appam, oyster omelette, tamagoyaki, chawanmushi and more.

In Shopping & Style, get a crash course on Korean cosmetics. We highlight the top three trendy looks of the season, along with a guide on how to achieve those looks with the top Korean beauty products. Also, in conjunction with Merdeka, we select the best shops for Malaysian-made crafts and fashion.

In Nightlife, find out more about the new live music venue in the city, Forbidden City, plus a new whisky bar in Damansara Uptown. We have also listed the best happy hours in KL, perfect for your afterwork drinks.
