Our favourite places at Ampang Park shopping centre

In light of recent news that Ampang Park shopping centre will shut down for construction of the future Ampang Park MRT, we decided to pay the place a visit (hereby admitting that despite it being very close to Time Out KL headquarters, we've been taking its presence for granted and not visiting as much – blame it on the cafés). Before it closes for good (actual date still TBA), hop on the LRT to its namesake station, and wander through the narrow (slightly dingy) hallways of one of KL's oldest shopping centres (tip: bring a friend and go during the day). You'll find plenty of tailors and shops selling traditional wear, as well as a random mix of electrical shops and specialty stores. Here are some of our favourite places at Ampang Park:

Cozy Corner
An old-school place with old-school charm and old-school flavours. Perhaps one of the earliest halal Western-style restaurants in KL, it was a popular dating spot in the ’70s; today, it’s frequented by families for its signature chicken chop.

Fourtyfive Skateshop
Although this isn’t among the oldest shops in the building, skaters have been coming to this store not just for the skateboards and its hardware but for clothing and accessories as well. The store carries several homegrown labels and has even hosted a film screening in its tiny space. As of right now, we’re not sure whether the shop will be relocating to a new location soon but we’re certain that the local skateboarding community will miss it.

Antaraduit Agensi
Ampang Park has several money changers, but the best ones (ie, the ones with better rates) are hidden. On the ground floor, head inside towards the supermarket and walk along it until you see a neon 'money changer' sign (it's located beside the florist and across the newsstand). If you're feeling really adventurous, there's also another good money changer (Subhiyah United Money) on the first floor.

News KTV
Sound proofing and equipment are slightly questionable here but News KTV is probably the cheapest spot in the city centre for karaoke. Rates are by the room, and you're even allowed to bring in your own food and drinks.

Big Book Shop
There's an actual book store on the first floor of Ampang Park, the kind reminiscent of our school days. While you won't find the latest bestsellers here, you can find a range of old titles for RM15 each, as well as plenty of primary and secondary school reference books alongside reasonably priced stationery and school/office supplies.

Dunkin' Donuts
A ride up the narrow one-person escalator is Dunkin Donuts, home of sugar encrusted baked goods and pretty good black coffee. This outlet may be a bit quieter than its counterparts, but it does afford a nice view of Jalan Ampang traffic – and a good hiding spot. No one will ever find you here.

Ampang Fresh Supermarket
This isn't exactly Isetan, but it's a decent supermarket in the area that stocks most of the major brands and some imported ones. Come here for the 'Cameron Highland variety' produce.

McDonald's
For some strange reason, there is no other McDonald's outlet in the city centre (the small kiosk at the KLCC food court was curiously short-lived). Hence, this McDonald's is a gem to many working folk in the area, as proven by the lines of adults in office wear eager to get a Big Mac set at lunchtime. It also played a big part behind this April 1 blog post we did. And for that, this McDonald's will always have a special place in our hearts.
