To many of us, coffee is a morning staple; it’s (almost) an unavoidable expense. But a recent trip to an international coffee chain shocked us: the price of a small (or entry size) black coffee has increased in price by almost 20 percent.

So we decided to compile a price list of the coffee offered at some of the most popular coffee shops, kiosks and cafés in the KLCC area. We’ve compared the prices of an entry-size cup of the most basic espresso-based long black/Americano – but since the entry-level sizes may differ from shop to shop, we used the number of shots instead as an indicator.

Of course, the quality of the beans, the procurement process (fair trade etc) and also the environment (either a café or a takeaway kiosk) are some of the factors that will influence prices. However, this is strictly a price comparison, and is intended just as a snapshot of the coffee price index in the KL city centre.

The cheapest coffee in this part of town is RM5 at Room 203 (at Hampshire Park, next to Plaza OSK) and Plan b Roasters at The Intermark – they also offer the most value for money at only RM2.50 per shot – while the price for a long black/Americano currently tops at RM10.10. Here’s the list.
