Smartphone apps can save time and money while travelling. From getting hotels discounts to booking last-minute flights, there’s an app for everything! We’ve rounded up the best travel apps that’ll make holidays with the family that bit easier.

Skyscanner

The Skyscanner website is one of the easiest ways to find flights, and it’s great at delivering deals on cheap flights. It’s not that different from the app, which has a well-designed and user-friendly interface. When you open this location-based app, it’ll automatically state where you are presently and ask where you’d want to fly to – great for last-minute getaways. When planning for a trip, simply enter start and end locations, along with dates, your preferred flying class and the number of passengers. There are a number of extras too; for example, the app can show a chart of typical flight prices around your chosen flight dates. This will tell you if it’s worth considering flying a day or two earlier or later to get cheaper flights.

KAYAK

This app offers an easy convenience in finding flight deals offered by different airlines. It’s more conventionally designed in terms of look and feel than Skyscanner, and is quite straightforward to use. It also offers extras, like the option to search for flights within one or two days on either side of a target date, which will present more results. An interesting feature of KAYAK’s app is that they offer a price forecast service, which has price history charts showing recent trends as well as a handy alert when or whether your airfare is likely to increase. KAYAK has plenty of other features as well, like the ability to book hotels and rental cars alongside flights.

Booking.com

While the Booking.com website allows you to book everything from accommodation and flights to rental cars and restaurants, its app leans more towards providing fantastic accommodation deals. With more than 1,000,000 hotels, restaurants, apartments and more available to explore, the best deals are (almost) always easily accessible. As most hotels allow you to book without a credit card, you’ll be able to get your hands on the last-minute reservations without any problem. You can search by city, hotel name or even a nearby landmark to easily find the most suitable location for your holiday! There’s also the option to fiter by availability of WiFi, price and review.

BeED

Perfect for young travellers, this app offers a fun way to combine travel and education. BeED is a location-based app that allows the kids to learn through an interactive experience. When kids open the app, they can select a specific city and a large map will pop up, showing the city’s centre and locations with available learning experiences. All the kids have to do is select one, and they’ll be presented with interesting information about as well as the background and history of the place. Even better, kids can curate their own fun-filled travel adventures by adding these locations to their itinerary.

Duolingo

Planning to head to a country that speaks a language you have a limited (or no)  knowledge of? Download the language app before your journey to begin practicing the basics in an easy, approachable way. The app offers a comprehensive list of languages to learn, from Spanish and French to even Hebrew, Swahili and Polish. Though learning a new language can be daunting, it’s important to have at least a few key phrases tucked away when you’re in a new place. With Duolingo, lessons are broken up into quick and easy sessions that you can digest while even on the go.
