Whether you're an avid music fan or just looking to party, we've got you sorted. This week's picks include Norwegian musicians Guro Skumsnes Moe and co, veteran jazz pianist Michael Veerapen and instrumental rock band Skits.
An art lab for musicians and artists alike, Serious Play Improv Lab (SPIL) encourages performers to collaborate and express themselves through improvisation. This instalment features special guests Norwegian musicians Guro Skumsnes Moe (vocals/bass), Håvard Skaset (synthesizer) and Joakim Heibø Johansen (drums); the trio formed punk rock band MoE. Also on the bill are KL-based improvisers Sudarshan Chandra Kumar (electronics), Yong Yandsen (tenor sax) and Kok Siew-Wai (vocals).
Michael Veerapen is a veteran jazz musician while Samantha de Lune is a talented multilingual singer who boasts earthy vocals. Kick off your weekend at Bobo KL as the duo takes the stage for two nights of smooth jazz.
Instrumental rock band Skits' jams are mischievous, punky, sprawling sonic-scapes laced with audio samples from our local past. Take 'Fall From Grace', our favourite track from their 2016 debut (it earned them a spot in our Top 30 local tracks of 2016 list): the song sounds like an adventure, the kind where Kassim Selamat from 'Ibu Mertuaku' is guiding you halfway, and by that we mean he is sampled in the song.
Get up close and personal with some of Malaysia’s rising talents at Intim Sessions by klpac. Expect vibrant performances from these acts as they light up the stage at klpac.
If you’re in the mood for classical music, MPO brings two masterpieces by Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. Russian conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky takes the stage along with an orchestra to perform the prelude of Wagner’s opera ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’ and Wagner’s ‘Symphony No 7’.
