Sometimes, it's not about the fancy plating or modern cooking techniques. Sometimes, all you need is a classic messy burger that you can only get from a humble streetside stall.

Burger Bakar Abang Burn has about 19 outlets across the country and a regular spot in various bazaars and night markets. Abang Burn’s offerings may not be as extensive as the other names on this list, but rest assured that you’re getting quality over quantity here. Plus, the patties are handmade, so you know you’re getting the good stuff.

The menu consists of regular beef and chicken burgers and a ‘premium’ selection – think a 250g patty burger (RM12.90), a ‘burger tower’ (from RM33.50) with multiple patties, a burger with a chicken and beef patty combo (RM14.90) and more. If you’re not worried about your calorie intake, Abang Burn’s latest creation is a burger with a patty wrapped in melted cheese. Note that certain items are subject to availability depending on the outlet you visit.

America has Bob's Burgers, KL has Burger Bobby. Working right out of his house in Taman Lembah Keramat, Bobby has been masterfully flipping burgers since 2004, making him a veteran in the street burger scene. And a revered one too, as evidenced by his excellent burgers and loyal fans who camp out at the two tables parked outside his home once he opens in the evening.

His menu is a dizzying one populated with intriguing names (burgers paying homage to Armin van Buuren and Malaysian food blogger Bangsar Babe, anyone?), so to make things easy we say go for the Pahlawan Merah. It's a whopper, with a thick well-marinated patty (beef, chicken or lamb) encased in a fried egg, topped with a cheese slice and drizzled generously with chilli sauce. A mountain of sautéed onions and cabbage complete this warrior of a burger, and it's all sandwiched between fluffy thick-cut buns. If Bobby takes a shine to you, an ice-cold soft drink is on the house (what a hero).

Regarded as the pioneers of the burger bakar craze in KL, Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw has several outlets across the Valley, but its outpost in Wangsa Maju is the most popular with its constantly long queues. The combination of various options plus the freshness of their handmade patties and sauces gives you something of a hybrid between a gourmet and street burger.

A must-have is the Cheesy Baconizer – grilled beef burger loaded with onions, lettuce and beef bacon drenched in cheese sauce and house-made Cajun sauce; it also comes with a side of sausages to boot. If this hefty specimen isn’t enough, you can amp up your burger with up to three patties!

Cheesy Baconizer, RM14.50.

Having been around since the late ‘70s, Jackson’s Burger is a living legend among PJ folk, particularly those who’ve grown up in and around the Section 14 area. Don’t expect sloppy burgers dripping with mayo and sauces here: Jackson’s main appeal after all these years are their homemade beef and chicken patties, which use better quality meat, and is cooked with just the right amount of margarine to create a crisp, brown crust. We recommend having the double beef with egg and cheese (RM8.70), because one patty just isn’t enough.

If what you’re looking for is a good old back-to-basic greasy burger, look no further than Om Burger. This humble stall in Ampang has been around since 1986 – that should be testament enough to the popularity of this place. The Ramly patties are cooked together with the egg and cheese in a pool of melted margarine, which makes the patties here crispier than others. The combo of the fried cheese-egg topping and crispy patty is everything you’d want after a night out at the bar.

A popular supper spot in Damansara Uptown, Burger-Mbira is where you’ll find partners Jenna and Zam selling their specialty burgers made with their own-made patties. If you’re feeling hungry after a long night out, go for the Big & Taste Extra (RM10), which has two beef patties with two slices of chicken, lettuce, hash brown, cheese and mayo – the hash brown provides a solid crunch to compensate for the soft and soaked buns, and tastes particularly good after a few drinks. Other burgers worth trying out are the Chicken Spicy Deluxe (RM7) made with spicy chicken patty and Lamb Burger Special (RM8), with an omelette-wrapped lamb patty.

A classic Ramly burger never gets old – think fluffy margarine-toasted buns, a well-cooked juicy patty and generous amounts of sauces. At Mus Burger, the typical Worcestershire sauce is replaced with sweet soy sauce and black pepper sauce – this amps up the burger’s flavours and gives it an interesting sweet and salty taste. With the variety of burgers sold here, you’d want to get your hands on one of those exotic ostrich, rabbit or deer burgers from the special menu. If not, go for the traditional oblong sempoi. Whichever you choose, you can count on a classic done right.

The burgers in KL have certainly grown in size. They're no longer just buns and patties; the new monster burgers these days are stacked high with unconventional ingredients (in a burger at least) such as pisang goreng, peanut butter, mac and cheese, and even two whole chicken chops.
