Christmas trees, winter villages and Santa – shopping malls in KL are outdoing themselves (and each other) every year with spectacular Christmas decorations. And as probably every KLite knows, accompanying these decorations are usually festive performances and pop-up stalls offering special promotions. So, here's our guide to the Christmas events, activities and promotions in KL's shopping malls. ‘tis the season to be jolly indeed.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

The centre court of Pavilion KL has been transformed into a Christmas-themed fun park, complete with towering Christmas trees, hot air balloons suspended from the ceiling, and animatronic Santa Clauses and elves to pose with. Walk around the area and you’ll discover a host of ongoing activities to keep you occupied for the day, including carnival games where you can win giant plush toys, merry-go-rounds for the kids and pop-up stalls.

Among the scheduled events include Christmas carolling (December 16-17 & 23 at 12noon); Santa Claus walkabouts (December 16-25 at 1pm), and Christmas band performances (December 12-17, 19-25 & January 1 at 1pm & 8pm). Visit the website for their full schedule of events.

Standing at 32ft tall, KLCC’s Christmas tree located at the park is the country's tallest according to the Malaysia Book of Records. The decorations are equally impressive, with reindeer ornaments and colourful lights that light up the park at night.

At the centre court inside, you'll find an Enchanted Forest where several Christmas trees surround a two-storey wooden house, providing the perfect backdrop for a photo. Also happening here is a host of activities – meet and greet sessions with Santa Claus (every day until December 25 at 2pm and 5pm), carolling (December 15-17 & 22-25 at 5pm), ballet performances (December 15, 19 & 21 at 6pm) and many more. Bangsar Shopping Centre

It’s a snowy white Christmas at Bangsar Shopping Centre, with the ground floor of one wing decked out with two-storey high Christmas trees, giant gold and white baubles, and a life-sized snowman made for those Instagrammable moments. There are also pop-up stalls selling Christmas decorations, clothing, jewellery and tableware. Meanwhile, at the other wing you’ll find even more pop-up stands in front of Jason’s Food Hall selling chocolates, kitchenware and other Christmas-themed goodies.

Among the scheduled events include brass band performances (December 16 & 17 at 1pm), Christmas carolling by La Voce Choir (December 23 at 1pm) and the St Ignatius Church choir (December 15 at 3pm). Bring the kids here on December 15-17 and 22-24 when Santa Claus will be making his rounds and giving out Christmas goodies to children. Visit their website to see the full schedule of events.

Mid Valley Megamall

The Christmas decorations in Mid Valley Megamall mimic an old English train station complete with a replica of a steam-powered locomotive, track signs and platform. Surrounding the centre court are a multitude of Christmas trees – some over ten feet tall – that are decked out in giant pine cones, ribbons and silver baubles.

Catch appearances by Santa himself along with Christmas carolling sessions (December 16-17 & 24-25 at 7.30pm), music and puppetry performances from Zap (December 16-17 at 8pm), and an orchestral ensemble performance by Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia (December 22-23 at 8pm; December 24 at 4.30pm). The Gardens Mall

The mall’s concourse area on the ground floor is bright and glittery this year with white, blue and green decorations such as suspended mistletoe, reindeers and trees – perfect for a Christmas photo op. The best part is, all decorations are fitted with LED lights and threads that shine brightly. The Christmas trees get the sparkly treatment too with glittery baubles, shiny snowflakes and ribbons and more.

Among the activities lined up are brass band performances (December 16, 22 & 24 at 1pm), ‘Let it Snow’ carolling sessions (December 1-25 at 2pm), a Christmas musical (December 15-17, 22-25 at 5pm) and more. Visit their website for more details of activities and performances.

1 Utama has created a whimsical winter wonderland filled with snowmen, fluffy white clouds, giant presents and a Wintery Trail for those Insta-worthy shots. There's also a Christmas Snow Slide that leads into a massive ball pit that kids can slide into, but you'll need to spend a minimum of RM200 at any Onecard outlet before doing so.

There will be a host of activities going on during this festive season such as a pizza-making workshop (December 22 at 3pm), performances by the University of Nottingham Malaysia College Orchestra (December 16 at 3pm) and St John's Alumni bagpipers (December 25 at 3pm). The Christmas decorations at Sunway Pyramid this year follow the theme of 'A Magical Tudor Christmas’, complete with Christmas trees, cobblestone walkways and vintage store houses inspired by a typical Tudor town. There's even a 'Post Office' where you can personalise your own postcards that can be sent to loved ones, as well as an interactive photo booth and plenty of quirky Instagrammable spots around the area.
