The inclusion of a full menu available in the pub plus an adjoining coffee shop make it perfect for stopping for the night on your way in or out of the city.

Located right in the heart of Leeds’ city centre, just a short walk from the train station, Clayton’s rooms – which you can nab for well under £100 – are as spacious as they are convenient. With gym access available for all guests, as well as a buffet breakfast and a downstairs brasserie, bar and events rooms, the Clayton easily rivals some of the bigger (and potentially pricier) chain business hotels.

Haley’s Hotel sits just outside central Leeds, and offers classical elegance – think open fires, tall staircases and ornate dining rooms – to go along with its uniquely decorated, homey bedrooms and charming atmosphere, all for about £80 for a night’s stay. Transport links to the city and all the nightlife, shops and bars of Headingley are a stone’s throw away, too.

Hinsley Hall has 50 impressively affordable rooms (as low as £60 a night) in an incredibly ornate Victorian listed building surrounded by four acres of greenery, all in the midst of Headingley. It’s a mile and a half from the centre of town, but there’s ample free parking so a top choice if you’re driving.

Convenience is the name of the game with the Discovery Inn, which provides simple, comfortable rooms, full amenities and a continental breakfast all for as little as £50 – located literally over the road from the train station. Considering its price, location and the inclusion of a 24-hour front desk, this is probably your best bet if you need an emergency place to stay in the centre of the city.

Play your cards right and you can end up paying under £50 for a room at this charming little Headingley hotel, which features cosy, warmly lit rooms lifted straight out of a country cottage and an Edwardian interior décor. It’s only a few minutes away from Leeds’ main cricket and rugby grounds too, making it the ideal choice for sports fans on a budget.

Just north of the city centre is the High Bank Hotel, a friendly, modern place with full amenities, vegetarian breakfasts and number of simple, homely rooms. It may not have all the bells and whistles of some of Leeds’ fancier hotels, but that ought not to be much of a problem considering you can get a decent room for as low as £30 per night.

The New Masons Arms is a small, friendly pub situated in Oulton, a short drive outside the city. What it lacks in convenience, however, it more than makes up for in the charming décor of its rooms, its exemplary service and the chance to stay in a proper, ales-and-pies, friendly Yorkshire pub. It’s the ultimate northern experience. Rates bottom out at around the £50 mark.

A little under ten minutes from the city centre is the Avenue Hotel, a cheap and comfortable option providing small but highly affordable (that is, as low as £25 for a night if you can get a good deal) rooms in a quiet suburban location, with full amenities and a spacious bar to relax in. About as low as you can go without hitting the hostels.
