Put your money away! Here are the week’s best free events

Science Uncovered

Dive in and explore the depths of the sea at the Natural History Museum’s Oceans Night. Find out what some of the world’s top marine researchers are doing to protect our oceans, handle specimens from behind-the-scenes collections or go on a tour of the tank room to see thousands of preserved marine animals (including a giant squid called Archie who’s 8.62 metres long). You’ll have a whale of a time. Natural History Museum. Tube: South Kensington. Fri Sep 29, 6pm-9.30pm.

Free cake at Dominique Ansel Bakery

It’s been a whole year since Cronut creator Dominique Ansel opened his first London bakery. To celebrate, he’s giving away free slices of seasonal brown sugar and plum cake all weekend. Sweet! Dominique Ansel Bakery. Tube: Victoria. Sat Sep 30-Sun Oct 1.

Spanish Olive Festival

Love olives? Stuff your face at this three-day festival. Try free samples, marinate your own to take home and taste dishes cooked by the likes of José Pizarro on the live demo stage. You’ll feel like you’re in the Med. Well, almost. Canopy Market. Tube: King’s Cross. Fri Sep 29-Sun Oct 1.

Art Licks Weekend

Now in its fifth year, this three-day festival sees 65 arty spaces across east and south London open their doors for (mostly) free workshops, talks and exhibitions. Create art on your laptop, experiment with ceramics or go on a walking drawing tour. Various locations. Fri Sep 29-Sun Oct 1.
