It’s that time again. With the arrival of a new month, we’re looking back at the last four weeks to let you know which of London’s thousands of restaurants won a place in the coveted Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland.
You know how it goes: to secure a much sought-after spot in the guide, restaurants have to demonstrate to Michelin inspectors that they are consistent, have mastery of flavour, use quality ingredients and boast a chef whose personality shines through in the cooking.
In August, just one London eatery was added to the guide. But last month, the capital fared much better. Six of our city’s restaurants earned their place on the Michelin Guide in September. They range from a revamped 200-year-old British dining room to a boisterous spot offering a modern take on Georgian fare. Here are the latest London additions to the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland.

Simpson’s in the Strand, Strand
This illustrious institution dates way, way back to 1828. But new life was breathed into it earlier this year under new owner Jeremy King (the same man behind the Wolseley and Brasserie Zedel). After a six-year hiatus, Simpson’s welcomed diners back into its breathtaking Grand Divan in April with a menu full of classic British fare, from prawn cocktail starters to rhubarb crumble desserts. After sitting down for a meal there, our critic said ‘the food is perfectly fine, but it’s the atmosphere that’s truly exceptional’.

Bar des Prés, Mayfair
Bar des Prés landed at its new address on Audley Street in Mayfair in May. Just like its previous iteration, it offers up a combination of Japanese and French inspired dishes such as yakitori-style chicken, satay beef fillet, Scottish langoustine ravioli and a selection of maki. We’ve yet to try out the new Bar des Prés for ourselves, but the Michelin Guide reports that ‘the glitzy design and fine artworks lend a real sense of occasion’.

chez Rose, Mayfair
Named after co-founder Spencer Metzger’s late grandmother, chez Rose is a warm, homely corner of W1. The French bistro serves up small plates like steak tartare with pomme gaufrette and orkney scallop, Café de Paris butter plus larger dishes like aylesbury duck breast with blackberry and tournedos of beef au poivre. Michelin Inspectors praised it for its ‘unfussy’ menu and ‘great produce’.

DakaDaka, Mayfair
If you’re not yet acquainted with Georgian cuisine, let DakaDaka introduce you. This energetic dining room in Mayfair (with blaring music, a busy open kitchen and communal tables) focuses on flame-cooked dishes from the region, alongside traditional soup dumplings and stuffed flatbreads. Time Out’s Andrzej Lukowski gave the restaurant four stars and said: ‘DakaDaka is not fine dining, or even quiet dining, but it’s not blingy or crass either, just… enthusiastic. And when you’re representing your national cuisine as well as this, why wouldn’t you be?’.

MRBL, City of London
MRBL is big on meat. More specifically, it’s big on beef. The Leadenhall Market spot has dubbed itself ‘The House of Big Cuts’, with a selection of steaks that have all been dry aged for a minimum of 35 days. It prides itself in exclusively using native breeds that have been grass-fed and reared on farms in Yorkshire and Norfolk. Take your pick out of sirloin, ribeye, fillet tail, skirt or rump cap with classic sauces on the side.

Sushi Amamoto
This 16-seat omakase restaurant took over the space on Albemarle Street previously occupied by Michelin star Japanese restaurant Taku and has kept on its head chef Jongho Park. Sushi master Shogo Amamoto is the exec chef patron and this is his first spot outside of Taiwan. Here, diners have the choice of two incredibly indulgent omakase menus: 17 courses for £180 or 22 courses with ‘ultra-premium ingredients’ for £380. Michelin points out that the Spanish tuna is a particular highlight.
