Nothing says Christmas quite like twinkling lights. Even the Scrooges among us must admit that seeing London all lit up is more than a bit nice to look at. Chuck into the mix the glistening River Thames at twilight and you’ve got a one-way ticket to festive feels.

Speaking of that river-lights combo, this week the Southbank Centre’s Winter Light trail has returned for the 2025 festive season, What’s more (and as always), it’s free to visit and there’s no need to book.

This year’s Winter Light festival has transformed the area into a glittering wonderland of lights and art installations, such as a neon display commemorating fashion ads from the 90s by France-Lise McGurn. There’s also a chandelier-esque sculpture by Lee Broom outside The Royal Festival Hall which puts on a show every hour – coinciding when Big Ben strikes.

When your fingers start to freeze, there’s plenty to warm you up at the outdoor Christmas market: steaming cups of glühwein, sizzling bratwursts, and artisan treats. Or you could catch a show – the play Top Hat at the Southbank Centre is a tapdancing extravaganza – or see an exhibition at the Haywood Gallery. So grab your scarf, round up your mates, and take a wander down the South Bank this November and December. Whether you’re after a date-night stroll, a family evening out, or just an excuse to feel Christmassy, the lights are guaranteed to dazzle.

You can catch Winter Light from November 12 to until January 18, 2026.
