Doing stuff on your own is cool. Gone are the days when strangers might judge the person standing on their own at a concert, or sitting in a park with only a book for company. The chicest solo activity of them all, though, is definitely going for a meal.
If you’ve never enjoyed a meal on your lonesome, now is the perfect time to try it, as the British Museum has just announced that it will be offering punters the chance to dine in its calming Japan Room as part of a new collaboration with Itsu. The catch? They’re only offering tables for one.
Diners will be treated to a curated range of ‘warming noodles and Japanese beers’, including katsu korokke curry and chashu pork ramen. You’ll have 20 minutes to enjoy your independent culinary adventure, and this could be the only chance you ever get to enjoy a hearty meal in the heart of the UK’s biggest museum.
The scheme is being held in celebration of Itsu’s brand new ‘noodles & broth’ range, developed with Masterchef judge Monica Galetti. The line includes brand new noodle-pot flavours, which you can sample at the British Museum, and improvements to old favourites like katsu curry.

As you eat you’ll be surrounded by historic Japanese artefacts as well as modern artworks and pottery. As with everything at the British Museum, the exhibits have been curated by experts in the field, telling the story of Japan from ‘prehistory to the present’. All of that, of course, along with a fresh portion of noodles, and no one to tell you how to enjoy the experience.
The museum will be opening up its Japanese Galleries to diners for two evenings only: Monday September 29, and Thursday October 9. Both nights it will be open from 6.30-9pm, and you’ll need to book ahead to ensure your place. Don’t worry though – booking is completely free. Book your place here.
