Have a Dickens of a night in with Hawksmoor’s Christmas Carol Fillet Box

Some Scrooge with your steak?

All being well, Christmas 2021 ought to stand in stark contrast to its predecessor: you should be able to enjoy a night out at a top-tier steak restaurant, or go and see a stage production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ without there being any risk of the whole thing being clobbered by some kind of tier system.

However, combining the two in one evening would certainly be tricky, and not everyone feels comfortable doing such things, either due to Covid worries, tight budgets, or simply because we’re all so bloody tired all the time now.

Well in a nice seasonal twist on its usual fine home meal kits, the mighty Hawksmoor is launching the intriguing Christmas Carol Fillet Box, which combines a delicious (if you don’t bugger up the cooking) three-course steak-based feast with access to a stream of a specially made digital theatre production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ from Oxford’s well-regarded Creation Theatre. Although the food isn’t based on that consumed in the story (Hawksmoor has no truck with turkey), the idea is that meal and play complement each other for a domestic dinner theatre experience that should run to approximately two hours, with breaks in the story for cooking (and a few unbilled surprises in the box, too). However it all pans out, it’s a spirited and interesting spin on the familiar meal kit, and it’s great to see Hawksmoor investing in ideas like this beyond the grim imperatives of 2020. The kits go for £125 (add on £20 if you want booze), which is only slightly more than the usual price of a Hawksmoor fillet box, so why not, eh? God bless us, every one!

The Hawksmoor Christmas Carol Fillet Box delivers select dates between Dec 2 and 30, with Creation Theatre’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ available to stream throughout December to purchasers. You can pre-order here.
