Hopping on the tube is part of the day-to-day routine for many of us in London and it’s easy to forget that the often stuffy, sweaty, ridiculously busy service has been ferrying visitors and locals across the city since the 1860s. In other words, it’s actually an incredible piece of our city’s history.
The London Transport Museum – who else? – hasn’t forgotten just how much our transport network is entwined with the city’s identity. And in order to help us appreciate its beauty over the years, the museum has opened an exhibition dedicated entirely to a historic collection of posters.
Called the Global Poster Gallery, the gallery will show off several of the LTM’s most gorgeous transport posters. In its on-site archives, the museum has more than a thousand original artworks which were once displayed on public transport in London.
And it’s easy to see why you’d want an entire gallery of these posters. Lots conform to the beliefs of Frank Pick, who was the first ever chief executive of London Transport back in 1908. Pick enlisted designers inspired by world-famous art movements like futurism, cubism and surrealism to create posters that were both informative and caught your eye: bright, bold and gorgeous.
