Even if you’ve been out of education for decades, there’s a real back-to-school energy in the air. After several blissful months of heat waves, beer garden gatherings, al fresco dining and day festivals, the rainy days, earlier sunsets and colder nights have got us all ready for hibernation.
But not so soon! Autumn brings a whole host of fresh new things to see and do across London. This weekend there’s the annual London Podcast Festival, a bunch of new theatre shows, fantastic new restaurant openings, a free festival of Black culture and a three-day celebration of East Asian cuisine and creativity, to name but a few.
Of course, to enjoy the best of what London’s got going on, you’ll probably need to take public transport. The bad news is that travelling around the city will be a little trickier on Sunday (Sep 7) when London Underground workers begin a period of industrial action. But there will be other options. Here’s all the travel disruption this weekend that you need to know about.

Tube strikes
London Underground services will be affected by industrial action from Sunday, September 7. TfL has warned that Sunday will see limited services on all Underground lines and advises travellers to complete their journeys by 6pm. You’ll still be able to get the London Overground and Elizabeth line.

Central line
As well as the disrupted services on Sunday due to strikes, the Central line will be partly closed on Saturday. There’ll be no services between Marble Arch and Loughton/ Hainault (via Newbury Park) between 1am and 5.30am. Then, from 5.30am there won’t be any Central line trains operating between Liverpool Street and Woodford / Newbury Park.
There won’t be any replacement buses so you’ll have to use local London buses instead. You can also use the Jubilee line for Stratford and the District or Hammersmith & City lines for Mile End.
Overground
Mildmay line
On Friday, the 9.59pm Mildmay train from Stratford to Richmond will terminate at Camden Road and the 11.17pm train from Richmond to Willesden Junction won’t run. The 9.04pm and 10.34pm Saturday services from Clapham Junction to Stratford and the 11.19pm train from Clapham Junction to Willesden Junction are cancelled.
Also, expect a reduced service between Willesden Junction and Camden Road all day on Sunday, with trains only running every 15 minutes. The 8.48am Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction train will only run from Shepherds Bush to Clapham Junction, as will the 9.15am train that usually starts at Gospel Oak. The 9.51am Mildmay train from Camden Road to Willesden Junction train won’t run and the 9.58am Camden Road to Clapham Junction train will travel from Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction only.
Suffragette line
Friday’s 11.03pm Suffragette train from Barking Riverside to Gospel Oak won’t be calling at Gospel Oak and will terminate at Upper Holloway.
