If you thought Selfridges couldn’t get any more bougie, think again. The swanky Oxford Street staple has just been granted planning permission to turn part of its fourth floor into a private members’ club – because shopping should always be followed by a crisp glass of Dom Perignon in a very exclusive private bar.

Yes, despite the seemingly never-ending stream of Soho House knock-offs and members-only rooftops popping up in every postcode, it seems that London’s appetite for exclusive establishments hasn't yet been satisfied – and now Selfridges wants a piece of the action.

Set to open in spring 2026, the department store’s shiny new club will be called 40 Duke (named after the store’s Duke Street address) and will include a private dining room, a bar and lounge with space for 80 guests, and a terrace seating a further 64. There’s even going to be a retractable canopy – presumably so your designer glad rags don’t get rained on.

And there’ll be plenty of time to alternate between shopping and eating indulgent bar snacks; 40 Duke will be open from 8am to 12.30am Sunday to Thursday, closing even later (1.30am) on Fridays and Saturdays – meaning there’s technically nothing stopping you from staying all day and all night.

Plus, you’ll be able to enter either via street level or through Selfridges itself, making it a perfect new secret hideout for fashion insiders, or just somewhere very posh to avoid the Oxford Street crowds.

Planning permission for the capital’s next high-end hangout was granted by Westminster Council last Tuesday, so the transformation is now officially a-go. There won’t be any music allowed on the terrace (the neighbours said no), but let's be honest: that’s unlikely to stop this new elite establishment from becoming the next go-to date spot for all the worst people you match with on Hinge. Or Raya, if you’re one of the lucky few.

Whether the rest of us will ever actually get in is another question. But for now, you can at least say you knew about it before it was cool. Or open.
