Old habits might die hard but at Smithfield Market they’re breaking 800 years’ worth of tradition and embracing the greener side of life.

Having cemented their reputation as the UK’s largest meat market, from today the London institution will also be stocking vegan-friendly alternatives for the first time ever.

Partnering with plant-based foodies Moving Mountains, butchers PJ Martinelli will be offering the chance to stock up on a bit of both. They’ll be selling Moving Mountains’s signature burger: a realistic ‘bleeding’ patty, made with oyster mushrooms and beetroot – alongside their standard meaty fare.

It’s a small step, but a significant one. After all, doesn’t life in the meat market sound better if you can take the occasional clean-living breather?

Don’t fancy cooking? Try these top-notch vegan-friendly London restaurants.

Bag a bargain (edible or otherwise) at the city’s best markets.
