One of our favourite fast and easy restaurants in London has announced it’s closing down at the end of next month.

Sonora Taquería in Stoke Newington will be shutting up shop on October 31, for what they call an ‘indefinite break’.

The taco shop, which has been one of our favourite Mexican restaurants in London, started life as a street food stall and was Netil Market’s most in-demand trader until it pulled down the shutters in 2022. It’s known for its quite frankly excellent barbacoa and carne asada tacos, as well as quality quesadillas.

Sonora Taquería is run by husband-and-wife team Michelle Salazar de la Rocha and Sam Napier. The couple released a statement about the closure of the restaurant, which opened in 2023: ‘Throughout these years we’ve also gone through an immense amount of hardship in our personal lives, while simultaneously trying to run this business to the best of our abilities.’

They continued: ‘We feel very proud to have been very successful at it but it has also given us a new perspective on what we want for our lives as a couple. We feel ready to move on and try something new. This has always been a tool to showcase Sonora, Mx, and we’re really proud to have done so. So now it’s time for us to go back home and touch base.’
