1. Mess about in boats at Totally Thames festival
Who doesn’t fantasise about a better (if damper) life on a houseboat, bobbing on the Thames? Pick out your dream pad at St Katharine Docks's annual Classic Boat Festival, which brings together more than 70 classic vessels. Would you cosy up on a humble 1930s narrowboat, or live it up on the late Queen Elizabeth’s spectacularly shiny Diamond Jubilee barge Gloriana? As well as exploring the boats, you can also listen to talks hosted by yachting journalist Tom Cunliffe and other maritime experts, and chill out by the water, enjoying live music with a retro flavour. And if that whets your appetite for more boat fun, head to The Great River Race, where you can see Chinese dragon boats, Hawaiian war canoes, Viking longboats and Irish curraghs powering their way down the Thames in an off-the-wall celebration of life on the water.

This is the weekend that architecture fans wait for all year: the one where the city's most intriguing buildings throw open their doors for special tours and free range wandering. But be sure to check the festival's website for availability before you make the trip, as some spots can only be accessed if you've booked a free spot months in advance, while other places are easily accessible to anyone ambling up on the day.

3. Get a taste of Iceland at a free festival
If you’ve been on holiday to Iceland, the chances are high that you’ve been faintly horrified by the price of food and drink, and have ended up subsisting on bread rolls smuggled from the breakfast buffet. It’s a pricey place! But it’s also an amazing one, full of natural wonders and a whimsical, blackly humorous approach to living in an environment that’s dark for months on end. Sample its wonders at free festival Taste of Iceland and you can giggle at the entries in the World's Worst Photographer exhibit, listen to a literary talk on Iceland Noir with crime authors Ragnar Jónasson & Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, or learn about the science of the Northern Lights from an Icelandic astronomy expert. There’s also a menu of Icelandic delicacies, but unlike the other events, it’s not free, so your taste of Iceland will have to remain strictly metaphorical.

4. Feel somewhat reassured about our AI-driven future at this creative weekend
If you’re fed up with AI slop taking over everything from gig posters to wedding speeches, then get a more nuanced view on our future at Creative Intelligence. This weekend-long festival at Southbank Centre is full of smart perspectives on where we’re heading, with voices including author Jeanette Winterson, performer Love Ssega, and leading scholar of artificial intelligence Kate Crawford all weighing in on the conversation.

5. Spoil your dog rotten (or bother other peoples’) at a pooch-centric fest
If you're the kinda person who finds the sight of a pup in a pram ‘adorable’ rather than ‘a sign of the decline of decadent Western civilisation as we know it’, then you're bound to have fun at this weekend’s Big Woof. It’s full of delightful diversions available for any pets who are mentally depleted from exhausting lives spent eating, snoozing, and pooping on pavements - including tarot readings, painting sessions, and doggie ice creams. Don’t have a dog? No problem, you can join the Cuddle Club and stroke someone else’s pet, for free.

6. Join the fun at Woolwich Carnival
A fortnight after Notting Hill laid on a massive party for millions of revellers, here's a more chill way to get into the Carnival spirit. The pretty courtyard of Woolwich Works will host a day of live music, dance and community parades celebrating the different cultures which make up the local area. Expect spectacular costumes, street food stalls, and lots of opportunities to dance the afternoon away.
