Thameside dining, secret gardens and fascinating history: Why we love Bankside

Big news, London: our very first podcast, ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’, has just dropped – and it’s all about Bankside. Here’s why we’re big fans of this Thameside neighbourhood

If there’s one thing we Londoners do well (apart from queuing, obvs), it’s neighbourhood pride. Think about it: how long did it take after you moved into your current area before you started to wax lyrical about your nearest coffee shop? Or declare the boozer on the end of your street ‘The very finest in London’? Exactly. Local pride is a beautiful thing – and at Time Out, we’re all about embracing it.

It’s why we’ve launched our very first podcast, ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’, sponsored by FREENOW. The concept is simple:  a Londoner of note takes our editor Joe Mackertich on a tour of a neighbourhood that means something to them. Together, they’ll visit places that our guests love; parks, pubs, galleries – who knows? Perhaps even public toilets.

In the first episode, which is out now, Joe meets Bimini in Bankside. Together, Joe and the ‘Drag Race’-dominating drag artist, model, writer, musician and activist – who just moved to the area – visit some excellent, and some rather unexpected, spots in the area. Which spots, exactly? You’ll just have to listen to find out.

We’re really proud of our podcast. And we’re super excited to have FREENOW on board. After all, FREENOW is the mobility super app, making getting around London easier than ever with four options – we’re talking private rides, black cabs, eScooters and eBikes.

Why not take a trip to Bankside with FREENOW and check out some of these top spots?

Three reasons why we love Bankside

1. There’s something intriguing around every corner

Stunning views of the Thames, the towering Tate Modern, moody cobbled streets and cosy historic pubs: these are the things that probably come to mind when you think about Bankside. But what about the weirder bits? Start with tracking down Crossbones Graveyard – a post-medieval burial ground for paupers, which might have been entirely forgotten if it hadn’t been protected by the Friends of Crossbones and managed by environmental charity Bankside Open Spaces Trust. It’s a beguiling, beautiful space, cared for by volunteers. For some more hidden history, look out for the eerie remains of Winchester Palace, built in the thirteenth century. For something a little grander, pay a visit to The Golden Hinde, a shining full-size reconstruction of a famous Elizabethan galleon.

Want to explore more of the South Bank? Hiring an eScooter (Tier and Dott) with FREENOW is easy – just open the app and look for your nearest option. Enjoy!

2. Outdoor eating options abound

When the weather’s playing ball, there’s no better spot for an alfresco feast than Bankside. You can’t go past Flat Iron Square for its cheery vibes and great food options including Breddos Tacos and Gamekeeper (yep, that’s wild game). We’re also big fans of Maltby Street Market, where you’ll find the likes of Gyoza Guys, Duck Frites and Amen Ethiopian Cuisine.

In a hurry? Good news: the benefit of hiring a black cab with FREENOW is that these vehicles are allowed to use bus lanes – making them super-speedy. You’ll be where you need to be in no time!

3. It’s packed with arts and culture

Of course there’s the epic Tate Modern – we don’t even need to expand on that because you know and love it. (Although if you’ve never been to Tate Modern Lates, on the last Friday of every month, you really need to get on that.) For something a bit different, check out Bankside Gallery, a terrific public gallery home to the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. And if you want something more historical? Shakespeare’s Globe awaits. Dedicated fans of the Bard won’t want to go past the chance to book the Shakespeare’s Globe Story & Tour, where you’ll hear behind-the-scenes tales of the iconic wooden ‘O’.

Time to go? On average, your ride or black cab is just six minutes away on FREENOW. We love to see it!
