What’s the deal with Beverly Hills?

Utter that well-known zip code—90210—and a particular image of Beverly Hills probably comes to mind: sports cars, celebrities, swanky hotels and high-end shops. While its stake as a pricey, entertainment industry-dominated city is certainly merited—there’s an unusually high concentration of splurgeworthy spas and drinks that break the bank—Beverly Hills is a much more approachable area than reality TV may lead you to believe.

Where exactly is Beverly Hills?

Beverly Hills is surrounded by other high-end neighborhoods, with West Hollywood to the east and Century City and Westwood, home of UCLA, to the west. Despite its name, most of Beverly Hills actually sits within the “flats,” with pedestrian-friendly districts along Santa Monica Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard and the triangle of streets near their intersection (including Rodeo Drive). North of Sunset Boulevard, the city turns into a hilly haven of palatial estates.

To get around

Though you’ll need a car to get to Beverly Hills, it’s a city best explored by foot, with tree-lined streets and meticulously well-groomed shopping plazas. Explore the best of Beverly Hills, from rooftop bars to botanical gardens, with our guide to the Westside city.

Every spring and fall since 1973, artists have descended upon Beverly Gardens Park to showcase their work to browsers and buyers at this arts festival (once called the Affaire in the Gardens). This year will feature 250 artists exhibiting paintings, sculptures, watercolors, photography and much more. Set on four blocks along the grassy stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard between Rodeo and Rexford Drives, the event will include something for everyone, with free kids’ activities, food trucks, and beer and wine gardens with live music.

Just because summer’s behind us doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a barbecue feast. The Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ—co-hosted by the Maybourne Beverly Hills, Spago and the City of Beverly Hills—returns this month to the Maybourne and the adjacent Beverly Cañon Gardens. This open-air event features meaty dishes from top chefs including Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton, Damon Gordon, Eric Werner and Daniel Castillo, alongside drinks from Florería Atlántico, Dante Beverly Hills and Employees Only NYC; live paper-cut art by Marco Gallotta; and a silent auction featuring luxury goods including Ferragamo bags. It’s all to benefit No Kid Hungry. Tickets are definitely pricey ($350), but hey, it’s for a great cause, and you’ll definitely be fed well.
