Geffen Playhouse has been an integral part of Los Angeles's theater scene since it opened in 1995. Founded by film director and TV producer Gil Cates, the theater company is named after philanthropist and entertainment mogul David Geffen and is split into two theaters: the Gil Cates Theater and Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, located on the same premises in Westwood. Over the years, it has welcomed award-winning actors to its stages, including Debbie Allen, Jason Alexander, Martin Short, Neil Patrick Harris and Beau Bridges. It has commissioned productions that have gone on to travel the country, some even making their way to Broadway (Time Stands Still, Wishful Thinking)—proving you don't have to take a road trip to the Big Apple to see top-notch shows. The theater company continues producing world premieres and edgy works in its 2017 season, so skip seeing a film in a movie theater and head to Geffen Playhouse for live performance you won't forget.
