Margot Tanjutco might be making her solo debut at this year's Comedy Festival, but she's no stranger to it; she was a stand-out in Jean Tong's musical Romeo is Not the Only Fruit last year. Unsurprisingly, her new show – about consumer culture, shopping and all the other things we do to make ourselves feel good – contains a bunch of songs and sketches alongside traditional stand-up. She's doing all of this to tackle the dangers of mass consumer culture.
"In the last 18 months I have bought so much stuff," Tanjutco says. "More than I ever have before, because of Instagram, Facebook ads and all these algorithms that were influencing me. And I knew exactly what they were doing, but I kept feeling this compulsion and need to buy stuff, and use material items to discover myself and express myself.
"This show talks about how awesome that is, as well as its perils."
