It is no secret that Japanese whisky is blowing up right now. It seems every whisky bar (and connoisseur) in Melbourne discovered Japanese whisky in the past five or ten years, and it's now on every menu and shelf.
Nikka is one of two big distilleries in Japan (the other is Suntory, which you will know if you are a casual Bill Murray fan), and Nikka whiskies have won awards in shows and competitions all over the world.
Zhou Zhou, the bar upstairs from Oriental Teahouse, is running a whisky tasting class for Nikka whiskies on January 29. You'll be able to taste seven different Nikka whiskies, including two cask-strength bottles unavailable for purchase in Australia. You'll learn about the history of Nikka whisky and how founder Masataka Taketsuru learnt the craft in Scotland and brought his advanced knowledge – and a Scottish wife – back to Japan.
There will be canapés from Oriental Teahouse as well as a whisky highball on arrival.
