In addition to icy roads, sidewalks and parking lots, look out for tree branches and electrical cables that could break under the weight of the ice.

Montreal temperatures are taking a dive, with freezing rain and ice pellets hitting the region.

By lunchtime, tens of thousands of Hydro Quebec customers were without power across the province—mainly in the Outaouais region.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, a drop in temperature will cause potentially hazardous weather conditions.

Freezing rain to the tune of 10 to 20 millimetres will fall across parts of the southern half of the province, including Montreal, the Laurentians, Gatineau and the Eastern Townships during the day today.

The amount of freezing rain could reach 30 millimetres in the Laurentians.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous.

In particular, look out for tree branches and electrical cables could break under the weight of the ice.

The good news? Spring will make a comeback on Thursday with a high of 8 C, and continue to climb into and throughout the long Easter weekend.

With Montreal’s recent fluctuations in weather—from extreme cold to unseasonably warm temperatures—there are plenty of indoor activities to choose from.
