It's hard to believe that cursive writing has not been a mandatory part of curriculum in New York State schools for 20 years. After all, how can you sign a legal document or check without a real signature? Or read a historic document like the Declaration of Independence?

Thankfully, it looks like the days of kids saying "I can't read that!" are soon to be over. PIX11 reports that Chancellor Carmen Fariña at the Department of Education is committed to working with NYC schools to incorporate cursive writing into regular third and fourth grade teachings. The 2016–2017 Department of Education manual states that "Evidence reveals an advantage for handwriting using pen and paper over keyboarding for students in grades 2 to 6 for amount written, rate of word writing, and number of ideas expressed."

Welcome back, cursive!
