Have you heard of Schoolyards to Playgrounds? It’s changing the way you access your city, and your kids benefit tremendously.

NYC’s Schoolyards to Playgrounds initiative (started back in 2007) has helped local families gain more access to local playgrounds that are normally gated or closed after school hours. Thanks to the program, aimed at promoting youth fitness, many playgrounds are set to receive (or have already received) renovations including sports courts, trees, benches and new play equipment, plus they’re open to the public from school close until dusk on weekdays and 8am–dusk on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Many more of the program-linked playgrounds are opening this summer (Brooklyn’s Public School 72 and Queens Public School 270 according to the New York Daily News) and fall—learn more on the Schoolyards to Playgrounds page from NYC Parks.
