**Please seek the recommendation of your healthcare provider if your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms.**

Parents have been on high alert during this horrific flu season, and understandably so. As news continues to circulate about the virus’ potency, moms and dads cannot help but wonder how to best protect their families.

Although a dose of panic seems inevitable, there are ways to prevent the flu from getting out of control. In an interview with pediatricians across the country, ABC News uncovered how to tackle this frightening season head-on, so it’s time to take some notes.

The first thing to do is be mindful of germs, whether that means sanitizing a play area or washing your hands—they’re simple but effective methods. And of course, should someone in your home get the flu, it’s imperative that he or she remains quarantined.

Although we’re not at the beginning of the flu season, you can still give your child the vaccination now if he or she hasn’t received it yet, ABC News reports. It it not as powerful this year, but it will still combat symptoms and potentially stop them. Should your child get sick, you should ask your pediatrician about acceptable anti-viral medications, according to the CDC.

Of course, the symptoms are concerning, but a fever doesn’t mean you need to immediately panic. Doctors who spoke with ABC said parents should take an ER trip if your child has difficulty breathing, experiencing persistent vomiting, feels dehydrated and does not show any signs of improvement. Depending on your child’s health, the flu can last seven–10 days, according to Romper, so that’s something to be mindful of as you keep track of your kids’ symptoms and behaviors.

For those who need a little reassurance after uncovering frightening headlines, doctors assured ABC News that as upsetting tragic stories can be, they are generally not common. Take a few extra steps toward cleanliness, be mindful of your child’s behavior and stay aware of your surroundings.

This season can be rough, so make sure you've found one of the best winter coats for kids, stay warm with these indoor activities for kids and spend a night in with the fam and watch one of these kids' movies.
