How did you settle on your neighborhood?

JS

I married into it; I actually prefer downtown. I love the East River, but I hate that there are no uptown ballet classes for boys.

DS

I was raised around here. I love the quiet. I’m just frustrated with the long commute to other parts of the city.

What do you like best about bringing up your kids in NYC?

JS

Lots of things. Being able to walk everywhere. The arts. The fact that it’s arguably the most—or the only—successful melting pot in the world. And of course, the many options for cupcakes.

Where do you take the kids for a little breathing room?

JS

Central Park and MoMA, with friends.

DS

The zoo. And many, many restaurants.

Which ones are your favorites?

JS

Luca, Barney Greengrass, Japonais, Primola and Haru.

What’s the best piece of advice you would give another city parent?

JS

When you’re in a restaurant or a movie and you say, “If you do that again, we’re going to leave”—leave. It’s better for all of us.
