Putting a new spin on swing music, the folks at Brookfield Place in Battery Park City is offering a chance starting Friday to indulge the kid in us all with “The Swings: An Exercise in Musical Cooperation.” The public art work consists of a giant swing set, which, according to organizers, provides “an interactive installation that offers a fresh look at the idea of cooperation—the notion that we can achieve more together than separately.”

The creation of design studio Daily tous les jours, each of project’s swings represents a different musical instrument (harp, vibraphone, guitar, piano) triggering a musical note when set in motion. The idea is for people on the swings to co-ordinate their movements to produce a melody pre-composed by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, a Beirut-born Canadian performer and producer. As an added bonus the swings light up at night.

The piece has been on a tour with previous stops in Detroit, West Palm Beach and Green Mountain Falls, Colorado, and this appearance marks its first in Gotham. It would last long, though: Swingers will only have until July 7th to make beautiful music together.
