It's no secret that Brooklyn is where music lovers go to hear the best, cutting-edge bands before they blow up, and on Sunday you can catch some of those talented up-and-comers at the 4th Annual Brooklyn Music Festival. This year the fest is bringing the DIY acts across the river to Governors Island.

Headliners Phony Ppl are the perfect soundtrack to your dreamy day in the shady, car-free bucolic oasis. The young, playful five-piece group mixed smooth soul singing with fresh hip-hop rhythms and funky bass licks on its debut, Yesterday's Tomorrow. We talked to the group when we named them one of Time Out New York's "Six NYC Acts You Ned to Know" in May, and recently they've been playing behind buzzy pop singer Kali Uchis (they'll both be NYC in October as part of a US tour).

Joining Phony Ppl on the lineup at the Love Stage is Heartland Nomads, Chelsea Reject, Boy Radio, Cosmonaut Radio, Danielle Parente and Amen Ra. Across the way at the Sunset Groove House is a full-blown afternoon dance party, featuring DJ sets by TR(Otter), Michael Suarez, Greco, Penny Lane, Jth3ory, KIDMOSS, Hard Candy and E.R.N.E.S.T.O.

Brooklyn Music Festival is on Governors Island (brooklynmusicfestival.nyc) Sun 6 at 11am. Free, pre-registration with guaranteed entree $10. Ages 18 and up. Register here.
