More exciting news blooms out of the Cherry Lane Theatre reopening: the historic West Village space is set to open its doors this September for the first time in two years under the tutelage of the A24 team, and it's putting together quite the start-studded welcome committee to celebrate.

From Monday, September 8 through Sunday, September 14, the theater will host a "Red Door Reopening" week with one-night-only special performances and events featuring the likes of legendary directors Spike Lee and Sofia Coppola (the latter of whom will also be hosting a Sunday night film series at the venue), Oscar-worthy actors Jodie Foster and Michael Shannon, Grammy-winning musician Brandi Carlile, comedy great Jerrod Carmichael and more. "The line-up showcases the curatorial expansion of The Cherry Lane Theatre, inclusive of comedy, music and film," per the theatre team.

The full Cherry Lane "Red Door Reopening" events includes:

  • Monday, September 8: A film screening of 25th Hour and Q&A with director Spike Lee
  • Tuesday, September 9: A staged reading of True West with Michael Shannon, Paul Sparks and Marylouise Burke, directed by Lila Neugebauer
  • Wednesday, September 10: A night of live comedy with stand-up comic Jerrod Carmichael
  • Thursday, September 11: A conversation between journalist-author Malcolm Gladwell and singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile
  • Sunday, September 14: A "Sundays with Sofia" film screening of Foxes and Q&A with director Sofia Coppola and actor Jodie Foster

The splashy week will conclude on Sunday, September 14 with an open-to-the-public block party along the theater’s Commerce Street block in Greenwich Village from 3pm to 6pm.

Tickets to all events will be equally priced at $59 and available for purchase via a lottery system. The lottery will be open for 48 hours from today, August 25 through Wednesday, August 27 at noon ET at CherryLaneTheatre.org. "The goal is to make these exciting inaugural performances accessible for all," says organizers.

The reopening programming joins the previously announced production of Natalie Palamides’ one-woman comedy Weer, running at Cherry Lane from September 20 through November 9.

It will be exciting to see the delicious mix of theatrical productions, stand-up comedy, film screenings, staged readings and other special events that the revamped venue—which was purchased by A24 film studio in 2023, undergoing an extensive renovation of the physical space and its technical equipment—will debut in the coming months. Equally exciting is the new bar and restaurant onsite, helmed by the acclaimed Frenchette team. Stay tuned!
