Of New York’s most prominent comfort foods—bodega bacon egg and cheese, piled-high pastrami sandwiches, cheap hot dogs—few are as simultaneously beloved and divisive as the burger. It seems like every New Yorker’s got an opinion on what makes the best burger in NYC. Time Out New York is here to narrow the beefy bunch down to the city’s 20 best with its annual Battle of the Burger.

But we need your help: Feast your eyes on our meaty contenders, from patty newcomers to burger icons, and vote for your favorite. The finalists will then go head-to-head in a live Battle of the Burger event, where guests can sink their teeth into top-rate burgers while enjoying live music and unlimited cold ones from Budweiser.

Alas, what is left of the US food habits, can be summed up in one word: hamburger. Ah, the hamburger: a worthy word and a worthy concept. The hamburger has a long history in the US, and is developing a devoted following abroad as well. The lowly burger has an almost infinite number of variants in toppings, styles and modes of preparation. Articles assessing local burger types are among the most abundant on the Internet. I do not say "alas" at all; I honor the hamburger as a worthy American artifact.

Best,

Amelia

There's no New York Burger Co. on this list?!?!?

It is NOT complete without, as they HAVE the best burger in NY without having to use the cheap meat to make it "juicy."

@George S They missed a lot of burger places I frequent like Bareburger and Jackson Hole. NY Burger & Co is also one I was searching for on the list. I'm surprised 5 Guys Burger & Fries made the list and yet Shake Shack did not.
