As a melting pot of cultures, Singapore has always been a vibrant and diverse city – and this is also reflected in the local music scene. Whatever genre of music your ears are craving for, the city’s got the perfect ear candy for you.

While live DJ sets, parties and festivals remain dormant, the music scene in Singapore is still working ‘round the clock, churning out choon after choon from house to synth-pop to hip-hop. And behind these boogie-worthy numbers are producers flexing their electronic muscles on their digital audio workstations, which mostly include computers and instruments such as synthesizers, drum machines, samplers and more, to create sonic masterpieces.

At a time when hitting the clubs seems far-fetched, music has helped turn our bedrooms into boogie wonderlands, so we’ve got the producers to thank for. To help you navigate the growing local music scene, we’ve selected the up-and-coming hitmakers behind some of your new favourite songs.

Halal Sol

Surfacing from the local electronic scene with a knack for deep house and acid jazz-inspired beats, Halal Sol manages to hypnotise music fans – and even fellow musicians he’s worked with – with every production he fashions. His kinetic grooves are energised by wafting synths, bouncy chords, and thumping cadence, topped with fitting soulful vocal samples. It’s not just the music that takes you to a whole other dimension on the dancefloor – watching Halal Sol dish out the sounds on his Abelton Live-synced devices is an immersive experience in itself.

Listen While we wait for his next gig, turn up the volume for Don’t Feel The Bass, the first single from his upcoming debut EP Dijamin.

This electronic wunderkind has been crafting his sound since childhood, so it’s a given that the young producer has a good ear for rave-ready anthems fit for the clubs – and even festivals. Not even 20 yet, and he already has over 30 song releases to his name. His discography is a melange of future bass, house and pop, but it’s hard to pin-point Foxela’s métier as the genre-bending producer doesn’t really let any genre define his sonic output. So you could say he’s a Jack of all trades who knows the key ingredients and trends that would appeal to the masses.

Listen All I Need could just be the party starter you need before the clubs are back in action.

Wovensound

While he’s not exactly new to the local music scene, Vinod Dass is taking on a new sound as Wovensound. Switching his metal boots for hip-hop trainers, the music maven takes a page out of Brockhampton and Tyler the Creator’s books to weave in elements of lo-fi, jazz and hip-hop in creating tracks that sound like a road trip altogether. As a producer, he’s always on the ball for exciting collaborations to create unique masterpieces that don’t just stick to the mainstream formula – his link-up with rapper Ihasamic! on Last Train, and Sickleberry Sunsets has proven so.

Listen Before his six-track EP Vertigos Fulfilled drops in June, hit play on his latest collab with Ihasamic!: Lonely Shores.

Kidmeddling

No matter the co-artist, hearing “K-k-kidmeddling on the track. Don’t even trip, baby” in the intro is enough to convince you to listen to the track in its entirety. Besides having a flair for photography and videography, in which he dabbles as part of the creative collective The Island Boys, Kidmeddling also lets his creative juices spill into music. With trap beats and heavy bass, his hip-hop marinated productions have led him to team up with local rappers including Louie Indigo, and Tengyboy. But that’s not all – his shimmering productions have also roped bedroom-pop darling Shye for an easy-on-the-ears single.

Listen Shot Dead with Tengyboy, Feez, and Mediocre Haircut’s Mickeyleano for a fire hip-hop collab.

Quando

Despite the pandemic, 2020 turned out to be the breakout year for Quando, so this should tell you something. The local producer was recently signed by EDM titan Hardwell and his influential label Revealed Recordings. He has also garnered major support from Blasterjaxx, Maurice West, and Dash Berlin. And we can see why – the hype is justifiable by his entrancing big room mix of progressive house, electro house, bass house, and a hint of pop. If this is just the beginning for Quando, we’re excited to see what’s next.

Zionn

A can of good vibes, this producer and multi-instrumentalist is no stranger to creating unique sonic realms filled with original lo-fi instrumentals and euphoric dance, hip-hop, R&B and pop numbers. He best demonstrates his versatility with rompy collaborations featuring synth-pop act Keat, soul songstress NyaLi, as well as rapper Subhas and his internet sensation sister Preetipls. Besides dishing out happy ditties, the producer is also the bassist of pop-R&B trio He1st, and has performed for audiences at Ignite Festival and Baybeats.

Listen Lay Low, a catchy, English-Korean pop hit with Elsa Mickayla and Jung.
