Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tart, the beloved bakery that closed after 26 years in 2024, is set to reopen in mid June, 2026, at Aperia Mall. The return, however, is taking a much different direction.

Led by two siblings, 22-year-old Zac (Benjamin Zachary Ong) and his 18-year-old sister Vernice, who both grew up eating Madeleine’s egg tarts, the new Madeleine’s is no longer just a bakery counter. It’s been reworked into a Macau-inspired cha chaan teng with a dine-in menu, blending nostalgia with a more contemporary café format.

Founded in 1998, Madeleine’s was known for its no-frills takeaway egg tarts and loyal following. It shut its doors after its shophouse lease ended and the original husband-and-wife owners retired. For a while, that seemed like the end of the story. However, the owners were approached by both Zav and Vernice about bringing the brand back.

Before putting their own stamp on the business, the siblings went straight to the source. The pair trained under Madeleine's founders to understand the recipe and techniques that made the bakery a household name, then set out to reintroduce the brand through a new concept.

So, what’s on the menu? At the centre of it all is its famous Portuguese egg tart, made from scratch daily and priced at $2.50. A more localised twist also appears in the form of gula melaka Portuguese egg tarts. Beyond that, the menu expands into Macau-style comfort dishes such as bolo bun ($3.50) with flavoured butter and vanilla cream, pork chop bun ($5.90) with mustard seed sauerkraut and sweet shoyu glaze, crab congee ($8.90) topped with an onsen egg, and minchee rice ($10.90) made with beef and pork Asian ragu, potato confit and a 63-degree onsen egg, with a vegetarian option available. Seasonal and fusion offerings include pan-roasted quail ($15; $8 half portion), beef stew capellini ($9.90), coated tropical fruits ($6.90) and coconut tapioca pudding ($4.90), alongside affordable breakfast bundles from $4.50.
