With big wigs, sparkly frocks and thigh-high boots, things are about to get kinky at the Sands Theatre from October 5 to 14. No doubt, Kinky Boots gives Beyoncé a run for her money with dazzling costumes, impressive dance moves and catchy numbers written by 80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper. But more than seeing men in frocks and heels, it follows a partnership between Charlie, the son of a shoe factory owner, and Lola, a drag queen. We chat with lead actor Lance Bordelon who plays Charlie to find out more about the musical, and whether Singapore is ready for it.

Why should everyone see Kinky Boots?
I love that there is this central, core message of acceptance of people that are simply different from you. This message transcends all social boundaries and simply reminds us that while we don’t all have to agree with each other, it challenges us to accept each other with respect, always. I think Kinky Boots is successful for many reasons, but I am most proud of the impact of this show because, much like in the spirit of Lola, this show is an open door, open arms, an open heart, and an open conversation about our shared human experiences. And it’s wrapped up in an incredibly witty book by Harvey, and driven by powerful music by Cyndi. It will entertain just as much as it will make you think.

How do you prepare your role as Charlie?
The process of getting into these characters – much like the casting process and the
rehearsals with our Broadway directors – is that we are empowered to bring so much of ourselves to our roles. As for Charlie, he hides very little of his emotions and thoughts from the audience or his peers, and we see him as transparent as he can be at various times in
the show. I think this honesty – even when it may hurt him or those in his life – is very refreshing to see in a character on stage. Plus, I share a very personal connection to Charlie, so it’s a true honour to bring to the stage every night.

With some heeled boots involved (and a conveyor belt!), how challenging is it to nail the choreography?
Luckily, the boots in the show are all custom made to each of us. They are slightly smaller than my actual foot, so they are snug and I can really grip the stage. But it definitely took some practice to get the hang of things.
Spoiler alert: some nights when I 'hit the dust', it doesn’t take too much effort to make my stumbling look realistic. But on a serious note, I have tremendous respect for Jos N. Banks (Lola) and the Angels who have rehearsed for 8 hours a day, and have performed 8 shows a week since September, in those heels!

What are some of your favourite numbers to perform?
Land of Lola, History of Wrong Guys, Soul of a Man and Hold Me In Your Heart.

‘Lola’ gives some serious Kinks vibes. If you could pick anything at all, what would your drag name be?
Our angels have come up with some hilarious and very creative names for themselves this year. My all-time favourite band is Queen, and I have so must respect for the vocals and musicality of Sam Smith, so I’d have to say Queen Samantha Smith!
