Nothing says I love you quite like whisking your special someone off to a far-flung part of the world with a reputation for turning up the romance. Paris and Rome? Done and dusted, New York and London? Too buzzy for lovebirds looking for a city escape. Make like Bonnie and Clyde and escape to these lesser-known – and less crowded – amorous cities instead.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque may be nestled in the high desert of New Mexico, but it's no dull and dry destination. Just step into the city's Old Town and you'll immediately appreciate its rich history. Ancient adobe structures housing shops and art galleries speak to its Native American and Spanish heritage, capped by the majestic San Felipe de Neri Parish, Albuquerque's oldest building. For some romantic sightseeing, get an unparalleled view of the Rio Grande Valley and the Land of Enchantment on the Sandia Peak Tramway – or if you're there in October – link arms with your lover and watch the skies burst with hundreds of colourful hot air balloons during the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

The Canary Islands, Spain

The Canary Islands make the perfect romantic getaway for the adventurous couple. This Spanish archipelago offers a dizzying spread of nature, culture and nightlife across eight main islands. You can island hop to sample the unique flavour of each island – the unearthly volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, the enchanting forests of La Palma, or the stellar restaurants and nightlife on Tenerife. The Canary Islands is absolutely roadtrip material too – which means meandering hours in the car just chatting and having quality time with your boo as you gaze at the islands' stunning landscapes rushing by.

New Caledonia

For being so close to Australia, the French territory of New Caledonia is pretty under-the-radar for most Singaporean travellers. This stunning clutch of islands boasts UNESCO World Heritage lagoons that have exceptional corals and marine life – making this a snorkeling and scuba diving heaven. If you're in for something more relaxing, the pristine beaches are perfect for a lie-down and suntan with your partner, and the capital Nouméa also has fantastic French food and luxury boutiques for any couple to enjoy. And pssstt – the island is about to become a lot more accessible from Singapore too. Stay tuned for more updates.

Kyoto, Japan

One of the world’s most beautiful cities, with more temples and natural treasures than anyone could hope to see in a lifetime, Kyoto is Japan’s ancient capital filled with breathtaking sights that inspire awe. Find your zen at Ryosokuin at Kenninji, which offers an introduction to meditation or embrace the madness at the flea markets at Toji Temple or Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Feel at one with Mother Nature by taking a stroll through one of Kyoto’s scenic parks like the Murin-an Garden or make the trek out to the enchanting bamboo forest and Enko-ji Temple.

Bath, England

Awash with thermal springs and lush limestone buildings, Bath is a city worth ticking off your bucket list the next time you’re in England. Its rich and varied history stretches back thousands of years, where it was first established by the Romans who built temples around the hot springs in 76BC – hence the city’s name. The pretty spa town has gorgeous Georgian houses, parks, sweeping crescents, timeless attractions and Victorian gothic structures, not to forget a fantastic cultural scene, with plenty of theatre, music, comedy, art and more.

Da Lat, Vietnam

You’ve been to bustling Ho Chi Minh City and the historic Old Quarter of Hanoi – make Da Lat your next romantic getaway. Nestled in the low mountains, the gorgeous city is home to lakes, hiking trails and plenty of cafés thanks to its heritage as a summer retreat for French colonial officials. Chase down Elephant Falls or paddle-boat your way through the Valley of Love before watching the sunset while you dine al fresco. Da Lat is a cool 20 to 25 degrees Celsius on average – and temperatures can even dip to 10 degrees Celsius in December and January – making it a convenient retreat from the Singapore heat.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

For over-the-top decadence, take a plane ride to Dubai to treat yourself to the richest luxuries the world has to offer. Dine at Pierchic, which sports a Swarovski crystal light installation over the bar and stunning views of the Burj Al Arab. Adventurous couples can also go dune bashing on a 4X4 or take a ride on a camel. Cap off the evening with a mouth-watering barbecue dinner as enthralling belly dancers perform in the background.

Agra, India

Part of India’s Golden Triangle that connects tourists to Delhi and Jaipur, Agra is home to perhaps the most iconic structure dedicated to love, the Taj Mahal. The ivory-white marble mausoleum famously took 20,000 workers 20 years to complete back in 1653. It’s the symbol of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s love for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal and serves as a reminder to treat your partner like royalty. After braving the crowds for your Taj Mahal selfie, explore the old market lanes of Agra hawking everything from spices to leather goods and delve deep into Mughal’s rich history, which can be seen all around the city.
