Back in June, we confirmed that Sydney was scoring a brand-new ferry route, with the new Sydney Fish Market getting its very own dedicated wharf. Now, we’ve got more news on the ferry front – with Balmain West Wharf (Elliott Street) officially rejoining the F3 Parramatta River ferry route, with services commencing this week. Now, residents of Balmain West can jump on the ferry and be in Circular Quay in just 30 minutes.

Before re-opening, the wharf went through a heap of upgrades, which involved installing real-time passenger information systems and improving the CCTV in the area. Transport for NSW Coordinator-General Howard Collins explained that the upgrades were about “more than infrastructure, they’re about restoring confidence in ferry transport and ensuring people in the Inner West have easy access to the places they need to go.”

The wharf is now fully operational, with weekday ferry services now operating from Chiswick at 5.50am, 6.50am, 7.50am and 8.50am, and from Circular Quay at 3.12pm, 4.12pm, 5.12pm and 6.12pm. All new services stop at Barangaroo, Drummoyne, and Huntleys Point.

According to Transport for NSW, this isn’t the only boost to the F3 ferry route in recent years – the F3 service gained 14 new weekday and 26 new weekend services in 2024, and there’s more good news on the way for Sydney’s ferry commuters. There are plans in the works to bring the F10 ferry service under the Opal ticketing network in early 2026 – which will mean passengers will cash in on Opal benefits (including transfer discounts and the $50 weekly fare cap).
