Macquarie Ice Rink has been saved from demolition

Just two weeks ago it was announced that Macquarie Ice Rink would close to make way for a billion-dollar shopping centre refurbishment. But you can't expect Sydneysiders to let go of one of our favourite long-standing attractions without a fight, which is why AMP Capital, the company behind the Macquarie Shopping Centre development, has today backed down on its plans to demolish the rink.

The Northern District Times is reporting that the community's campaign to save the 39-year-old rink has been successful, with AMP Capital committing to an Olympic-sized rink as part of the shopping centre into the future.

The decision comes after a Change.org petition to Save Macquarie Ice Rink amassed more than 31,000 signatures and Ryde Council voted ten to one to call on AMP Capital to maintain the skating rink.

And there's never been a better time to get your skates on and head to the rink: it had a major renovation in late 2018 and is one of our favourite places to cool down in the middle of a scorching summer.
