On a recent trip to Malaysia, Burwood's Bengong Tea and Bakery owner Leon Wan and chef Wesley Chen spotted one of those life-like puppy cakes in a local shop. The dog reminded Wan of his own dog, Rocky, and so he decided to immortalise his good boi in dessert form.

The puppy cakes at Bengong are made from a dark chocolate mousse, and set in a specially made mould. Later, the eyes and small details are filled in and the wee pupper is set on a bed of green cake crumbs. Depending on how your feel about these things, the surprisingly realistic looking cakes are either very weird or the perfect opportunity to unleash your cute aggression on a snack.

Because the cakes are so fiddly to make (they take three hours to produce), they can only make 20 per day and each one will cost you $20. Right now they only come in chocolate but there is discussion about introducing a salted caramel pooch to the line-up.

If viral desserts are your jam, Burwood is your destination, and while you're there you can add a cheese foam tea, passionfruit tea, or a tea jelly cake to your order.
