It’s a chicken shop… but not as you know it
A fancy dinner out is all well and good, but there are many evenings when all you want is to sit in front of your streaming service of choice in comfy pants and eat a rotisserie chicken. It's a simple pleasure, and it rests on the quality of the chook, the time it has spent getting bronzed, and the sides.
Luckily, the Chicken Shop on Oxford Street is a lifter not a leaner when it comes to a takeaway dinner. It's the casual tuckshop to Merivale's redux pub, the Paddington, and you can even order online so that your order is ready to go when you are. We don't recommend trying to stop on Oxford Street in peak hour, but the option for an Indiana Jones-style tumble from the car to collect it is on the cards.
We all want to eat better meat, so you'll be happy to know they're using the same free range, Bannockburn hens in the takeaway shop as they are in the fancy dining room next door. And those juicy, tender birds with salty, caramelised skin are without question the star, but they also do a second meat on weekdays. Mondays are for trout, Tuesdays you can get pork belly and on Wednesdays, it's lamb. Christmas might be behind us but Thursdays is ham day and they'll pack up thick slices of warm ham with a sticky-sweet glaze on the skin. You'll fight your nan for the last bit.
A side of green beans with crunchy hazelnuts and shallots will get you over the line on your veggie quota, but nothing beats a piping hot metal tray of tender sliced potato in a rich, creamy, cheesy sauce. Potato gratin gets the gold statue for best supporting side. If it's been a really shitty day, order the chocolate mousse too - you're eating at home, no one will judge your choices.
If Paddington isn't exactly en route to your house of an evening, pop by for lunch when they're serving fancy sambos, including a hot chicken roll with jalapeños and pickled carrot.
