Time Out says

A Melbourne Filipino barbecue joint teams up with Sydney's most prolific gelatiers

Gelato Messina has long had its fingers in a lot of pies – yes, including cookie pies – and now, it's bringing back one of its most exciting collaborations: Messina Eats. Back in the good old days, Gelato Messina would invite big names from the food world to its Rosebery HQ for collaborative one-offs.

Now, it's kicking off the pop-up food events again with an appearance by Melbourne Filipino barbecue masters Hoy Pinoy on Friday April 16 to Saturday April 17. Get glazed chicken and pork belly skewers (you might recognise them from the Night Noodle Markets); chicken spring rolls with crispy pork; vegan adobong talong fries with adobo eggplant; corn with coconut and chilli; and steamed rice with atchara, or green papaya pickle. Save your best for the one-day-only guest stars, too: Friday's highlight is a lechón belly (pork belly rolled with adobo marinade, roasted over charcoal and served with rice) while Saturday marks the day for a full lechón (a lemongrass and pandan-filled whole pig roasted over charcoal).

It wouldn’t be a Messina shindig without dessert: 'milo milo' is Messina's take on the Filipino dish of halo halo, combining malt flan, choc-malt crumble, Jersey milk gelato, choc-malt ice and choc malt powder. Grab some sweetened coconut milk or lemongrass iced tea for a refresher.

Head over from noon on Friday and Saturday for lunch or dinner – or until they sell out.
