It was a staple in almost everyone’s childhood cartoon collection – the story of Anastasia is simply magical for more reasons than one. With heartfelt songs like Journey to the Past and Once Upon A December, a determined heroine, and a glamorous tour around the ballroom, the animation was a childhood favourite without even laying claim to the Disney suite of cartoons.
Now, it’s gracing the Sydney stage for a strictly limited season, and this is your chance to see a stirring live rendition of the famous soundtrack. The show follows Anya, played by Georgina Hopson (Phantom of the Opera), from the Imperial rule to the vibrant 1920s Paris.
She’s on a mission to discover her long-lost family – namely the Dowager Empress, played by Australian icon Nancye Hayes AM with her confidante, Countess Lily (theatre legend Rhonda Burchmore). She’s helped along the way with cheeky conman Dmitry (Robert Tripolino) and his hopeless romantic sidekick Vlad, played by Rodney Dobson (Beauty and the Beast).
Produced by a Tony Award-winning team including Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and Darko Tresnjak, our Time Out critic shares that “Flaherty and Ahrens present a soaring, intricate musical landscape, which the Australian cast only elevates. They each have vocal power in spades, all ringing high notes and unapologetic vibrato. At times, the sound ricochets off the Sydney Lyric balcony with enough force to raise goosebumps.” You can read the full review here.
For a limited time, you can score Premium and A Reserve tickets for $85* (normally $99.90 - $179.90) on Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday performances from May 13 to June 21 here.
